Writing a brief
The brief is the most important part of a job order. It tells the writer exactly what is required of them.
How to write a good brief
A good brief should provide the writer with all of the necessary information required to meet your requirements.
The brief should specify:
- The intended audience of the piece - This will determine the tone of voice used. For example, website content for an over 50s holiday company will have an entirely different tone of voice to a page aimed at the 18-30s market.
- The purpose of the content - Is it to inform, persuade or entertain? This will have a bearing on the type of language used.
- The style of the piece - Is it to be formal or informal? Again this should determine the language used, as well as aspects such as tense, sentence structure and grammar.
- Include links to any web pages which are relevant for research purposes, or to give an example of the style you are looking for.
Sample Brief
A leading online marketing agency require a re-write of their web page content detailing their E-commerce offering. We require around 400 words of a similar style and tone to the existing page: http://www.acmeonlinemarketing.co.uk/ecommerce.
The purpose of this page is to inform our audience of the services we offer, whilst encouraging them to contact us for more information.
The tone of the piece is to be chatty and informal, whilst also appearing to be highly knowledgable. It is therefore essential that the writer has good knowledge of the subject matter.
The page should also have strong calls to action and links to other pages on the site which contain relevant information.
Attach supporting documents
If required, you can attach up to 4 supporting files to your brief. These will only be visible to the writer who accepts your job.
Accepted file types: pdf, doc, docx, odt, xls, txt, zip, rar, jpg, png, gif, tif, bmp
